The Black Country Living Museum recently approached us to design, cut, and form a funding acknowledgment plate for display on their grounds. The National Lottery provides funding to the museum through the Heritage Fund, supporting the maintenance and expansion of its services.
The finished plaque is now on display near the visitor centre, surrounded by an ornamental garden.
“This garden acknowledges and celebrates the major investment in the development of the Museum between 2019 and 2026. Made possible by the players of The National Lottery, the development takes our story forward into the 1960s.” -Black Country Living Museum
Design Stage
Steve Macaulay now oversees decorative panels and special projects. Working closely with the Museum and the National Lottery, he incorporated the Lottery logo to create a simple yet effective design.
The design consists of two intersecting plates that fit together to form a single column fixed at the base.

Cutting & Forming
Cut and formed from 4mm S275 mild steel on our 12kW fiber laser, the plates have no protective finish, allowing them to naturally rust over time and evolve with the weather.

We carefully formed each plate after cutting. The material’s thickness taken into account to ensure a precise and seamless fit. Next, the team welded the plates together on site and then bolted them down securely.

Installation
There has been a massive improvement to the space at the Black Country Museum. You can see from the photos below that the new garden and plaque tidy up the space. This creates a lasting acknowledgment of the National Lottery’s support. Over time, the weathering of the mild steel will give the piece a unique character.

Our Visit
David Pitt and Hannah Parsons from the Black Country Living Museum were kind enough to invite us down to take some photos and see it for ourselves.
“It looks so beautiful, and I’m excited to see how it will change as it weathers. It fits with the space so well! ” Hannah Parsons, BCLM.
“I would just like to say a big thank you on behalf of the Museum to all at Midtherm for your help, support and patience to get this project completed. Your assistance and generosity with this is very much appreciated.” David Pitt, BCLM.
